Southern Illinois University is one of 28 universities and colleges to host the 2023 Association of University Presses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show.
AUPresses is an organization of 160 international nonprofit scholarly publishers. Since 1937, the Association of University Presses has advanced the essential role of a global community of publishers whose mission is to ensure academic excellence and cultivate knowledge. AUPresses members are active across many scholarly disciplines, including the humanities, arts, and sciences; publish significant regional and literary work; and are innovators in the world of digital publishing.
The juried show, hosted at SIU by Southern Illinois University Press, features handpicked examples of superior cover designs, interior designs, and typesetting from 488 submissions published in 2022. It will be on display from Friday, April 19, through Friday, April 26, in the Hall of Presidents and Chancellors at Morris Library on the SIU Campus. Show catalogs will be available in the Hall, while supplies last.
“Though university press books are mostly known for their rigorous scholarship and peer review process, they are often beautifully designed as well. This exhibit celebrates the best-designed covers and interiors of books and journals that were published by university presses last year,” says SIU Press Director Amy Etcheson. “This show is a great opportunity for art and design students and faculty (or really anyone interested in typographic art and book cover design) to gain inspiration and ideas from this stunning showcase.”
The Book, Jacket, and Journal Show aims to celebrate the diversity of university presses through the wide array of subjects, forms, and methods for approaching scholarship employed by its winners. The presses showcased in the 2023 Traveling Exhibit range from small publishers with equally small staffs, including SIU Press, to the largest scholarly publishers in the world.
The exhibit is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
